In religious ceremonies and funerals in Taiwan, it is custom- ary for the family members to offer a ghost money to the deceased in the underworld by burning it. By doing so, the deceased can use the money in the underworld and live a good life. This custom reflects the Chinese people’s imagina- tion of the afterlife.

In this work, I used the ghost money from my grandma’s ghost money shop as material to make an illustrated guide on the use of different types of offerings.

“The Travel Guidebook for the Deceased” is a travel guide to the underworld for the spirit of the deceased in the afterlife. The work utilizes half-fictional and half-real explanatory text and book binding to recreate the meaning and imagination of daily objects.
